A break from straight lines !

March 1st, St David's Day.  (Patron saint of Wales.)

Over the past two weeks I've been concentrating on a series of outdoor studies of local buildings. This has been a real challenge for me as I'm far more used to the soft, organic lines of the more general landscape.

 Burnley Town Hall.  Sepia Wash.

Canal Back streets.  Ink Wash.

Burnley Library.  Sepia Wash.

High St, Colne.  Felt Marker.

Later in the year I hope to make a foreign painting trip and perhaps be presented with scenes as below.

For the time being I'm really looking forward to getting back into the countryside and having a 'break from straight lines'

Please stand still !

Grazing through snow.

Animals present a particular challenge to sketch as, unlike a tree, they don't stand still. I have to constantly practice to gain a 'shorthand' knowledge in order to include them in my landscapes.

The above painting is an example of how these studies of animals allows for spontaneity when painting out in the field.

Over the next few weeks I'll be concentrating on a series of local architectural landmarks executed outdoors in line and wash. I hope you'll come back to have a glimpse.

Beauty from my window.

Dear Subscriber,

Today I've been so absorbed with making frames for an upcoming exhibition that I've barely looked up.
As I sat to write this installment I gazed out of the window and was met with the sight of a blazing sky. Crimsons, burnt siennas, oranges and scarlets merging and mingling to mark the days end, true beauty from my window (and free)
